Review:

I feel like in this series, each book is better than the last. If the last book was recruiting for the rebellion, then this book is the war. Mare has turned herself over to Maven as his prisoner; torn apart and put back together in jagged pieces like grotesque paper mache. We see her fight tooth and nail to make it out alive, if not completely whole.

We also see from Cameron, a newblood with the power of silent stone, watch as the Scarlet Guard plans, not for Mare’s rescue, but their first steps into the fight for their lives.

I was truly transfixed with this one. Enemies and allies begin to blur together, and no one can see what’s at the end. Everyone is playing at a dangerous game, not even sure who will win. I think the best part of this installment were the many battles and fights that are waged. A lot more action than we’ve seen from the other books and I was here for it. And just when we thought Mare had endured the worst of it, her world splinters and falls apart once again.

I cannot stress enough how excited I am for the final chapter of this series. I’m sure it’s going to be the showdown to take all showdowns.
