"Bone Criers have a sacred duty: to ferry the spirits of the dead to the afterlife. But the gods demand a sacrifice from them to prove their dedication.
Ailesse has prepared since birth to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers, but first, she must complete her rite of passage by finding - and killing - the boy she is destined to love.
Bastien has been seeking revenge for his father’s death at the hands of a Bone Crier. When he finds Ailesse on the night of her ritual, their fates become entwined in life and in death.
Sabine has never had the stomach for the Bone Criers’ work, but when her best friend, Ailesse, is taken captive, Sabine will do whatever it takes to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien. Before they all die.”
Review:
This was such a fun little read! Honestly, I was hooked from the moment Ailesse attacked that tiger shark. The pacing for this was like NASCAR. We were flying through so much action and plot and I was here for it. There were times I will say that I was like “more???? When will this roller coaster end!” But in the best way.
This story gave us everything; it was enemies to lovers, it was sisterhood, it was intricate magic systems and lore, and one thing about this story, the tea was always piping hot!!! And Sabine was also such an amazing and surprising character for me. Going from someone who struggles immensely with taking life even though her culture (or religion? Race? Not sure what you’d classify Bone Criers as) demanded it of her, to by the end being a step below bloodthirsty. Crazy character development but I’m eager to read more of it.
I will say though, one thing I’m not too keen on is I wish the enemies part of enemies to lovers was more of a slow burn. I felt like one minute they hate each other and the in like the span of one chapter now they’re madly in love and willing to break life threatening curses for one another. I was like… wait a sec, did I miss something?
Overall though, this was really fun and engaging. I honestly have no idea what’s in store for the sequel but with an adventure this good I’m sure we’re in for a wild ride! As always, let me know your own thoughts and feels down below in the comments!
