Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett (Review #242)

“They call her Traitor Kate. It’s a title Kate Brighton inherited from her father after he tried to assassinate the high king of Rime. Cast out of the nobility, Kate now works for the royal courier service. Only the most skilled ride for the Relay, and only the fastest survive, for when night falls, the nightdrakes - deadly flightless dragons - come out to hunt. Fortunately, Kate has a secret edge: she is a wilder, born with forbidden magic that allows her to influence the minds of animals.

And it’s this magic that leads her to a caravan massacred by drakes in broad daylight - The only survivor Corwin Tormane, the son of the king. Her first love, the boy she swore to forget after he condemned her father to death. With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin must put the past behind them to face this new threat and ann even darker menace stirring in the kingdom.”

Review:
This was an overall decent book. It had all the necessary pieces for a good fantasy: a cool FMC, the privileged vs the oppressed overarching theme, forbidden romance, magic, and of course dragons (flightless ones tho, boo). I think this was a mid level book for me because nothing seemed all that original or unique to me. No twist or turn this story had really took me by surprise.

I want to read the sequel, for sure. I think for one I have read Arnett before and it was - again - mid to me. And I didn’t read the rest of the series to see if the characters developed more. So this time around (since there’s just the one sequel), I’m giving this story a shot to be better.

For the sequel, I want more action. This installment seemed to drag for the majority of the book and only picked up the pace after about 2/3 of the way in. I wanna see Traitor Kate start to take a real active role in this story like she did towards the end. For me, the finale fight scene was where it was at. It was violent and bloodthirsty and really grey for an MC who has been pretty black and white thus far which I love and I want us to delve into that more.
Overall a good read, but I need more from the sequel. I also want more of Master Raith, that man is foiiiiiiiine!!!! Anyways, let me know your own thoughts and feels down below, I’ll see you on the next one!

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (Review #20)

"Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can. She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed. There is. She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love. She's wrong." Review: This is a book you simply have to read. It's probably a part of my top ten favorite books list. Mara is this girl who just lost her friends and boyfriend in a terrible, but also peculiar, accident and now people who tick her off - and who she's attracted to (cough-cough-Noah-cough-cough) - are in her powerful line of fire... It's a tantalizing tale that will have you (for a lack of a better cliche) gripping the edge of your seat!!

Antigoddess by Kendare Blake (Review #141)

"Old Gods never die.. or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health. Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra - an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god. These days, Cassandra doesn't involve herself in the business of gods - in fact, she doesn't even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning. Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with others of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these antigods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caric...

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen (Review #34)

"Ever since her parents' divorce, Auden has been unable to sleep. She's built a routine that gets her through each night; but when the opportunity comes for her to spend her summer at the beach with her father and his new family, she jumps at the chance to break out of her rut. Life at the beach proves more challenging than Auden expects. In addition to trying to figure out how she fits in to her father's new life, she also has to navigate the girls at work with their gossip and friendship and crushes. And then there's Eli, a fellow insomniac who becomes her nocturnal tour guide. With an endless supply of long summer nights between them, almost anything can happen...." Review: I was a Sarah Dessen - virgin. This was my first time reading her work and it was inexhaustibly fantastic. I couldn't put it down. literally I stayed up all night reading this novel, maybe just how Dessen wanted me to. that is why I'm writing this at such an ungodly hour. Wh...
