"Working as a Wench―i.e. waitress―at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a Knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.
Company policy allows only guys to be Knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place, clobbers the Green Knight, and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But this Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other Wenches and cast members join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first."
Review:
This book is a standard 3 star. Good, not great. And really not all that memorable if I’m honest. I appreciated the cause and the movement and I appreciated that it wasn’t just about letting girls become Knights, but removing gender assignments for Knights altogether, opening up the floor to non-binary folks as well.
The story was easy going, the plot clear, laid out as Kit’s Plan. And like all stories, there were hiccups in the plan. For me though, it lacked any originality. I knew every turn this story took before it got there. Aside from Kit’s father, her uncle Len, and that one guy the Green Knight, every character was perfect and emotionally mature.
Any real investment in the story was swept away because everyone was understanding of mistakes, helping our character through every step of the way, and while I appreciated the camaraderie, it made the whole thing less suspenseful.
I think because it was a happy journey from beginning to end, it also lacked reality. Making substantial change is hard and unforgiving. Most people are hard to motivate because the disadvantaged are just that, at a disadvantage.
Overall, meh. Not really something I recommend. How about you though? Let me know your own thoughts and feels down below in the comments!
