Mortal Gods by Kendare Blake (Review #181)

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT: IF YOU HAVE NOT GOTTEN THIS FAR IN THE GODDESS WAR TRILOGY, STOP NOW. DO NOT READ. THIS IS BOOK 2. CHECK OUT ANTIGODDESS FOR THE REVIEW OF BOOK 1!

"Ares, god of war, is leading the other dying gods into battle. Which is just fine with Athena. She's ready to wage a war of her own, and she's never liked him anyway. If Athena is lucky, the winning gods will have their immortality restored. If not, at least she'll have killed the bloody lot of them, and she and Hermes can die in peace.

Cassandra Weaver is a weapon of fate. The girl who kills gods. But all she wants is for the god she loved and lost to return to life. If she can't have that, then the other gods will burn, starting with his murderer, Aphrodite.

The alliance between Cassandra and Athena is fragile. Cassandra suspects Athena lacks the will to truly kill her own family. And Athena fears that Cassandra's hate will get them all killed.

The war takes them across the globe, searching for lost gods, old enemies, and Achilles, the greatest warrior the world has ever seen. As the struggle escalates, Athena and Cassandra must find a way to work together. Because if they can't, fates far worse than death await."

Review:
Another gut-wrenching ending! I didn't cry this time, though thank goodness. So we had our worlds rocked at the end of the last book, with Cassandra killing Hera (not really), and Aphrodite killing Aidan (really really, he big dead). And with all that, now Athena has a war to wage. Along the way, we also get some new allies and some new enemies.

Firstly, I have a love/hate relationship with Cassie. With Aidan, the love of her life dead, she's lost a bit of her humanity and the power within her has become harder and harder to control. A part of me really enjoys her hunger for god's blood, and her hunger for the fight, but she has lost any joy she had previously. I get it, your dealing with grief, BUT SO IS EVERYONE ELSE. Maybe the power is part of the problem, but she has absolutely no empathy and it makes it that much harder to identify with her as a character. But I liked that about her? I don't know. I digress…

And then dear old Odysseus. My guy is pining for a goddess who loves him but won't give in to her feelings. And just when she's about to maybe give in to him, his ex, Calypso shows up. And the whole goddamn book he says to Athena, to be present in the moment, especially with war on the horizon. But she never does. This made the ending not all that surprising but no less devastating.

Finally my biggest frustration, Athena. GODDESS OF WAR. AND BATTLE. STRATEGY. Athena goes into a battle with NO STRATEGY???? She went into the final battle being like, "A plan? nah we don't need one, we'll definitely win." WHAT??? ARE YOU INSANE??? The minute it was said out loud I knew it was going to backfire so hard on them. I could not be more angry at her about it, it is literally in your job description to come up with a battle strategy. AND ODYSSEUS TRIED TO TELL YOU TOO!! Ugh.

Look, I went off and ranted a bit, but it all came from a place of caring, because I have really grown attached to all of them. Not so much the newer allies yet, but Hermes, Henry, Andie, Ody, Athena, and Cassie, I really want shit to work out for them. The book ended on a cliffhanger, with many unresolved points and I eagerly await the final installment of this trilogy.

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian (Review #29)

"Lillia has never had any problems dealing with boys who like her. Not until this summer, when one went too far. No way will she let the same thing happen to her little sister. Kate is tired of the rumors, the insults, the cruel jokes. It all goes back to one person - her ex-best friend - and she's ready to make her pay. Four years ago, Mary left Jar Island because of a boy. But she's not the same girl anymore. And she's ready to prove it to him. Three very different girls who want the same thing: sweet, sweet revenge. And they won't stop until they've each had a taste." Review: This book was FAN-TAS-TIC!! I am not for the petty popular girl books, and this is definitely not one of those books. The revenge you wish you got on the person who double-crossed you is finally let loose In one of the best and most inventive ways, and the ending left me jaw-dropped. This is a book everyone should have on their shelf.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (Review #20)

"Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can. She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed. There is. She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love. She's wrong." Review: This is a book you simply have to read. It's probably a part of my top ten favorite books list. Mara is this girl who just lost her friends and boyfriend in a terrible, but also peculiar, accident and now people who tick her off - and who she's attracted to (cough-cough-Noah-cough-cough) - are in her powerful line of fire... It's a tantalizing tale that will have you (for a lack of a better cliche) gripping the edge of your seat!!

Antigoddess by Kendare Blake (Review #141)

"Old Gods never die.. or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health. Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra - an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god. These days, Cassandra doesn't involve herself in the business of gods - in fact, she doesn't even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning. Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with others of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these antigods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caric...
