“At the turn of the twentieth century, Spiritualism and séances are all the rage—even in the scholarly town of Cambridge, England. While mediums dupe the grief-stricken, a group of local fringe scientists seeks to bridge the gap to the spirit world by investigating the dark corners of the human mind.
Each running from a shadowed past, Kate, Asher, and Elsie take refuge within the walls of Summerfield College. But their peace is soon shattered by the discovery of a dead body nearby. Is this the work of a flesh-and-blood villain, or is something otherworldly at play? This unlikely trio must illuminate what the scientists have not, and open a window to secrets taken to the grave—or risk joining the spirit world themselves.”
Review:
This was a sweet one. Similar to the Diviners by Libba Bray, we have 3 teens coming together to solve a murder most foul. Kate, a girl whose been on the streets swindling to feed herself until her circumstances bring her into the care of a professor. She was by far my favorite character. She believed love was for the foolish and relied on herself and no one else. When she cared for someone, she was loyal beyond reproach. And when she discovers her dear friend Billy, a street boy she swindled with, has been found dead, she will stop at nothing to find the person responsible.
Then there’s Elsie, the niece of the professor, who thinks falling in love will solve all her problems, such as being able to speak to the dead. Makes COMPLETE sense. Get it together Elsie, jeez. She’s clearly the beauty of the group and practically every man she encounters becomes smitten. And if she reciprocates she lets her infatuation completely take over. So stupid. What really interested me was her addiction that her mother forced on her.
And then Asher. A bit of a boring boy running away from a woman who hurt him, and the father who shipped him off to Europe. At first he’s a snob who only sticks around in the hopes Elsie will fall for him like a dumb dumb. He’s the skeptic of the three and only when it came to hard evidence did he join the investigation.
I honestly was surprised by who the killer ended up being but at the same time, he was right in front of our noses the whole time. And what affected me the most was Tec, another boy Kate and Billy swindled with. We don’t see much of him, but because Kate cared for him and he seemed to be in the thick of the mess, the ending really made me wish there was more so we could find out what what really happened. The book leaves a lot to be up in the air. I mean Elsie seems to think she knows but I honestly don’t believe it. Or I don’t wish to believe it. IF ONLY THERE WAS A SEQUEL!!!!
Miss Gensler can you please give us a sequel, I’d appreciate it. Anyways, another ghost story/murder mystery I enjoyed. Check it out for yourself!!!
Lemme know your thoughts and feels!!
