Wilder Girls by Rory Power (Review #160)

"It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her.

It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything.

But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true."

Review:
This was nothing I was expecting, I’ll be honest. A school full of girls deformed and infected with the promise of a cure as long as they stay alive.

For the most part, we’re in the point of view of Hetty. By far my favorite character in the book, she had a perseverance like none other. Even when all seemed hopeless she pushed for a way out, for a solution. While it’s clear how she feels about Reese, her relationship with Byatt was less cut and dry to me. She was ride or die for her, but did that mean she saw Byatt as a sister? As a love interest? It’s clear that she cares more for Byatt than she does for Reese, so what does that mean?

Reese was a hearty character. She was stoic by nature, but you always knew where she stood. Unlike the rest, this Raxter was her home. She lived on the island long before the Tox with her dad, the school’s handyman. She lost everything but was still tied to the place, while everyone else just wanted to return to their homes.

Byatt, was by far the most interesting in the bunch. When she disappears, we switch to her point of view every so often and her mind was not something I was expecting. Before she went missing, she was Hetty’s other half with a sketchy life on the mainland she was not eager to return to. Only after we switch to her point of view that we sneak a peek at what’s hiding underneath. To be quite frank, I still don’t fully understand the kind of person she is. I knew something dark lurked within, but how far did it go? Was Reese right in thinking that Byatt wouldn’t miss them? It seems hard for me to believe.

I truly don’t know how to walk away from this one. The cure????? Byatt???? The helicopters???? The girls???? I FEEL LIKE A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF TRYING TO FIND THE ANSWERS HERE!!!!!!!!! I have so many unanswered questions, I feel like I have to reread this! So much changed and yet nothing did. I can’t explain beyond that without spoilers.

The Harpy by Megan Hunter (Review #245)

“Lucy lives with her husband, Jake and their two boys. Her life is devoted to her children, her days, mapped out by their finally tune routine. Until a man calls one afternoon with a shattering message. His wife has been having an affair with Lucy’s husband. He thought she should know. Lucy is distraught. She decides to stay with Jake, if only for their children sake, but in order to even the score, they agreed that she will hurt him three times. Jake Will not know when the hurt is coming, or what form it will take. And so begins a delicate game of crime and punishment, from which there is no return…” Review: “Deeply unsettling” author Daisy Johnson said of this book, and honestly I think that’s the perfect description. For me though this wasn’t necessarily horror, and fantasy is a stretch at best, but let’s backtrack a bit. This story was about grief. Lucy is grieving and trying to heal from a monumental wound. She by no means is a pillar of a healthy psyche, but even in her worst mom...

Burn for Burn by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian (Review #29)

"Lillia has never had any problems dealing with boys who like her. Not until this summer, when one went too far. No way will she let the same thing happen to her little sister. Kate is tired of the rumors, the insults, the cruel jokes. It all goes back to one person - her ex-best friend - and she's ready to make her pay. Four years ago, Mary left Jar Island because of a boy. But she's not the same girl anymore. And she's ready to prove it to him. Three very different girls who want the same thing: sweet, sweet revenge. And they won't stop until they've each had a taste." Review: This book was FAN-TAS-TIC!! I am not for the petty popular girl books, and this is definitely not one of those books. The revenge you wish you got on the person who double-crossed you is finally let loose in one of the best and most inventive ways, and the ending left me jaw-dropped. This is a book everyone should have on their shelf.
