Wow oh WOW. I forgot how next-level the world of Mara Dyer and Noah Shaw is. I truly adore the Mara Dyer trilogy so I was so excited to see the story continue only in the eyes of Noah. In this book, Noah and Jamie talk about “types”, with Noah being chaotic good and Mara being chaotic neutral.
As a narrator, I enjoy the chaotic neutral better. A bit more spicy. But Noah is the good guy and you can’t help but love him for it.
I will say this book was really hard for me to read, but not for the reasons you think. Without getting too much into it, I have a history of mental illness, as well as self harm and suicidal thoughts (themes that are present in both trilogies). I read Mara Dyer when I was 16 - back when I was undiagnosed and in full swing of that aforementioned history. Today, reading this series was very triggering for me. Super duper triggering. It was very hard to get through.
After taking many breathers when shit got real, the story itself continues to be phenomenal. The relationship between Noah and Mara is so so complicated and it’s one of the driving points of the book. Like the synopsis says, Noah trusts Mara with his secrets and future and he shouldn’t.
It’s hard not reading in Mara’s voice too because we were with her in the beginning so I really want to know what she’s thinking though all this. Like I really want to know what made her agree to stay with Leo and Sophia to “practice.”
Noah was feeling apart from the rest of the team, but also kinda the leader a bit. He reminds me a tad bit of Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows. Just a teeny tiny bit.
And oh how the plot thickens!!!!! The Gifted are on the literal edge and it seems as though our team is barely clinging on!!!!! Ugh! I love it!
Overall, a magnificent read. I’m already itching to pick up the next installment!!!!
