“One boy is dead
One boy is injured.
And it’s all Kayla’s fault. At least, that’s what everyone thinks.
No one knows the real story about why she got behind the wheel that night in the first place, or about the promise she made to her friend Bean. The truth is, Kayla saw something at the party that she wasn’t supposed to, and she hasn’t told anyone.
Kayla fled her small town to escape the stares and accusations. But now she’s coming home for her senior year. If Kayla keeps quiet, she might be able to get her old life back. If she tells the truth, she was losing everything - and everyone - she ever cared about.”
Review:
WOW. I tore through that book in a matter of hours. Within the first 100 pages, my heart was beating with adrenaline, my face was flushed, and it seemed like everything was going to explode at any moment. It was captivating. The story is split into two time frames - Spring and Fall. And each chapter alternated between the two. We get glimpses in the past spring before the moment everything changed, as well as the present fall.
At first, Kayla is a pariah. An outcast. After what happened, she has been saddled with the blame, even by herself. And even though we know it wasn’t entirely an accident, we know there’s more to this tragedy than she’s letting on. Only three other people know what really happened that fateful night, and one of them is dead. I mean talk about TENSION. it doesn’t ease for even an iota of a second.
The weirdest part was when she wasn’t a pariah. One second of “forgiveness” and she resumes her post in the popular crew and it’s even MORE tense than before!!!! I couldn’t put it down for one second. I was with Kayla through it all. I was angry and ashamed; desperate to keep secrets, but aching to fulfill promises. Absolutely astounding. One of the best reads I’ve had in awhile. It was so raw and unflinching. I mean I think we all knew what happened, maybe not the full details of it but us readers knew. And we all knew exactly who the real villain was, despite the opening page being Kayla saying she’s isn’t a hero, implying her to be the villain. But UGH. I think it ended perfectly too. We truly don’t know what’s going to happen, and I like that. I’d rather not know. Because ideally we want it to go one way, but realistically it’ll go another, so it’s nice to kind of end on the before. With a semblance of hope.
Definitely a must read. It’s a book I just could not put down and neither should you! Let me know your thoughts, whether you’re going to put this on your to-read list or if you already read it and have your own thoughts!
