Comics Will Break Your Heart by Faith Erin Hicks (Review #131)

"Miriam's family should be rich. After all, her grandfather was the co-creator of smash-hit comics series The TomorrowMen. But he sold his rights to the series to his co-creator in the 1960s for practically nothing, and now that's what Miriam has: practically nothing. And practically nothing to look forward to either-how can she afford college when her family can barely keep a roof above their heads? As if she didn't have enough to worry about, Miriam's life gets much more complicated when a cute boy shows up in town . . . and turns out to be the grandson of the man who defrauded Miriam's grandfather, and heir to the TomorrowMen fortune."

Review:
This was a heartwarming read. Ah, young love. Mir and Welden are too cute. I loved that it was more than just a love story. It was about family and rivalry, yes, but also the future and friends. I loved Mir’s relationship with Evan, because with him she was never truly alone. He always had her back. And I loved the side storyline with Raleigh and her dumb meany-pants boyfriend. Still upset that Evan didn’t throw hands but I GET IT. VIOLENCE ISN’T THE ANSWER BLAH BLAH BLAH. But if you really think that Raleigh having a stern talk with him really changed him, you’re delusional. 

ANYWAYS. This story has so many layers and I loved exploring them. I do wish that Emma had the courage to be at Comic Con in the end, but she wasn’t the focal point of the story. But she had her own growth throughout, trying to get past her own traumas and learn to be there for her son. That was so powerful to me. SO powerful. What she did for her son in the end was a moment. But I wanted a liiiiiittle bit more of a conclusion for her too. But I understand she’s not the center of the story.

It was a great book all around and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something sweet but also uncovering the deeper issues in all of us. If you’ve read it, what are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments below!
